von Kármán Institute 70th anniversary
The von Kármán Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) is an international research and training center specializing in fluid mechanics. It is located in Rhode-Saint-Genèse, in the southern outskirts of Brussels. A celebration of its 70 years of existence will be held on September 18-19 2026.
Establishment of the TCEA (1956)
The institute was founded in 1956 on the initiative of Theodore von Kármán. A Hungarian-born scientist, he emigrated to the United States in the 1930s, along with many other leading European researchers of his generation. There, he made a vital contribution to the Allied war effort (regarding this period, you may have a look on the HyFAR-ARA series about Qian Xuesen, another world class scientist).
The institute was established in the former facilities of the Belgian Air Force flight school in Rhode-Saint-Genèse. This site already had facilities suitable for experimental research, particularly equipment related to aerodynamics and airflow.
The first activities of the von Kármán Institute in its present form, as envisioned by Theodore von Kármán, began under the auspices of the Belgian-American Educational Foundation for Experimental Aerodynamics (TCEA).
TCEA transitions to the von Kármán Institute (1963)
Widely regarded as one of the most influential aerodynamicist of the 20th century, Theodore von Kármán was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, the highest scientific honour in the United States.
Following his death later that same year, the TCEA was renamed the von Kármán Institute, in honor of its founder.
VKI 70th anniversary (2026)
Today, the von Kármán Institute conducts cutting-edge research in key areas such as space, sustainable aviation, energy transition, nuclear safety, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and critical infrastructure resilience.
Leveraging world-class experimental facilities, advanced simulation tools, and internationally renowned expertise, the VKI develops innovative technologies for future aircrafst, spacecrafts, energy systems, and industrial infrastructure.
The Institute also plays a crucial role in educating and training the next generation of engineers and scientists to address the technological challenges of the 21st century.
On 18–19 September 2026 the VKI celebrates its 70th year of activity, a two days tribute to the institution’s heritage and achievements, looking forward to the next decades of innovation.
